  • About MACOL

We strive to address children's fundamental needs

We're working toward a world where children living in poverty have more opportunities to create a better future for themselves and their families. Our mission is to create substantial and lasting change by funding holistic, long-term programs that address children’s fundamental needs: home, health, education and a sustainable family income.

At MACOL, we care about kids and we give generously to help meet the needs of those less fortunate than us – those who may be victims of society, of neglect, of disease. We give to educational and cultural efforts that enrich our lives. And we help bring about change. Through the donations, help and support we receive, we celebrate of the gift of giving.

  • Our Trachoma program

MACOL works to prevent blindness and empower those facing the challenges of visual impairment.

Trachoma is caused by Chlamydia trachomatis and it is spread by direct contact with eye, nose, and throat secretions from affected individuals, or contact with fomites(inanimate objects that carry infectious agents), such as towels and/or washcloths, that have had similar contact with these secretions. Flies can also be a route of mechanical transmission. Untreated, repeated trachoma infections result in entropion—a painful form of permanent blindness when the eyelids turn inward, causing the eyelashes to scratch the cornea. Children are the most susceptible to infection due to their tendency to easily get dirty, but the blinding effects or more severe symptoms are often not felt until adulthood.

Blinding endemic trachoma occurs in areas with poor personal and family hygiene. Many factors are indirectly linked to the presence of trachoma including lack of water, absence of latrines or toilets, poverty in general, flies, close proximity to cattle, crowding, and so forth. However, the final common pathway seems to be the presence of dirty faces in children that facilitates the frequent exchange of infected ocular discharge from one child’s face to another. Most transmission of trachoma occurs within the family.

Trachoma is a major cause of preventable blindness. This infectious eye disease typically affects people in impoverished communities lacking adequate access to clean water, sanitation, hygiene and healthcare. If left untreated, trachoma leads to total blindness.

The World Health Organization recommends the SAFE strategy—encompassing Surgery, Antibiotics, Facial cleanliness and Environmental improvement—for preventing trachoma.

MACOL will promote programs that make it possible to implement various aspects of the SAFE strategy for preventing trachoma in Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Ethiopia, Ghana, Mali, Mozambique, Nepal, Niger, Nigeria, Southern Sudan, Tanzania and Vietnam. Our funds will also support the World Health Organization's development of a trachoma curriculum to encourage the teaching of health and hygiene behaviors to prevent trachoma. This curriculum is now integrated into the health education programs of numerous schools in trachoma-endemic regions of the world.

    Guiding Principles

Everything we do is guided by our principles

    • Our support should assist people in need to help them make real and lasting changes in their lives and lead them to take control of their own futures.
    • We take a comprehensive approach to areas we support and address various contributing causes of a situation to get better results.
    • We try to be an active partner in everything we do – asking critical questions and, where applicable, sharing our expertise with partner organizations.
    • We always look to monitor and maximize the return on invested capital and improve the effectiveness and efficiency of our support programs, so we can be sure we’re doing as much we can for as many people as possible.

    Partner Requirements

Our partners have to prove annual progress

Our partners have to demonstrate every year that funds have been used properly and according to original intentions.

Concept notes are developed by the partners in close consultation with the Foundation’s administration. The Board decides whether the proposed programs are within the Foundation’s charter and in line with our expectations for financial and operational efficiency.

A positive decision by the Board will require development of a detailed program proposal, focused on creating a baseline, setting program objectives and establishing key performance indicators that will be used to measure annual progress and ultimate program achievement.

    Short Term Support

    Event-based funding

We sometimes give donations in an emergency – during or after a disaster, flood, famine, storm, war, drought, disease, earthquakes etc. We sometimes provide relief to individuals.

    Long Term Support

    On-going funding

We support a wide range of programs that address the full circle of fundamental needs that can help people break the cycle of poverty and ultimately take control of their own futures.

We also support pilot projects that can both make an impact now and be a good model for future programs.

All programs are designed to help people help themselves to a better life. They have a definite time limit and are often designed in close co-operation with local and national governments to ensure sustainability.
